Eight buildings on Sumenep, East Java, wrecked by quake

Sumenep, E Java (ANTARA) - A earthquake, measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, struck at 8:22:44 a.m. local time, on Tuesday, causing extensive damage to eight buildings in Raas Island, Sumenep, East Java.

Head of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency in Sumenep, Abd Rahman Riadi, remarked that Al-Fanisa Senior High School was one of the buildings damaged by the earthquake, while the six other buildings were residential structures and a prayer room.

"A student incurred slight injuries after being hit by material of a collapsed building, and he is currently being treated at the regional health center," Riadi revealed.

The wounded student Faisal was moved to the Indonesian National Exam when the earthquake ripped through wall tiles and struck his legs.

The report indicated that until now, only one was affected by the earthquake, according to Riadi.

The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency's rescue team in Raas District along with the local police rushed to the quake-struck areas to assist in clearing the rubble from the earthquake.

"We continue to assess material losses from the disaster," he noted.

The first earthquake, which was tectonic in origin, hit at 6 a.m. local time and was later ensued by five other aftershocks from 8:22 a.m. to 9:04 a.m. local time.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located five kilometers below the sea surface, some 83 kilometers to the southeast of Sumenep City, East Java.

Apart from Raas Island, the earthquake was also felt by those residing on Sapudi Island.

"However, Raas Island bore the maximum brunt of the disaster. There were no reports of any physical damage on Sapudi Island," he added.
