LIPI sends eight students for Intel ISEF event in US

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) sent eight Indonesian students from the high school and Madrasah Tsanawiyah levels (Islamic secondary school) to the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held from May 12-18 in Phoenix, Arizona, the United States.

"We want Indonesian students to get the widest opportunity to build global connections with teenage researchers from other countries," Head of LIPI, Laksana Tri Handoko, said in a written statement here on Friday (10/5).

According to Handoko, the experience of competing in international science competitions such as Intel ISEF will open the horizons and perspectives of students and inspire them to find new fields of research.

Indonesia was represented by William of Santa Laurensia High School with a research project related to aircraft wing technology modification for efficiency and flight safety, Michaela Samanta from SMAK Penabur Gading Serpong who researched genetic technology to produce animal protein rice to access food for poor families, and Angeline Freshbi Chesa Halim and Anglila Siddha Paramarthastri (Yogyakarta State Senior High School) who developed an online YouTube channel-based autism therapy.

The students also included I Made Wiratathya Putramas and Carolline Mathilda Nggebu (Denpasar Public High School) with their research project to develop active substances from mangrove species Rhizophora apiculata for environmentally friendly paint on ships, and Putu Diwyandaani Priyahita from Denpasar Public High School, whose project examined the electrical potential of the microlike (Biological Photovoltaic).

In addition, Indonesia will also send a delegation to join the Broadcom MASTERS® International and Official Observer to Intel ISEF program. This program is intended for junior high school students or the equivalent to see Intel ISEF activities and share experiences and research projects with 26 delegates from 19 countries.

In this activity, Indonesia was represented by Shafina Amelia Kansa from Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 2 Kediri who was the finalist of the 2018 Youth Scientific Work Competition in the field of life sciences.

He will share his research project on the use of sengon leaves (Paraserianthes falcataria) and cayenne (Capsicum frustences) to replace the use of carbide in curing Cavendish bananas.

The Intel ISEF event is being held since 1950 in collaboration with the Society for Science and the Public (SSP) and the Intel Foundation. The participation of Indonesian students is the result of a collaboration between LIPI and the Intel Foundation.

Intel ISEF will be attended by thousands of students from more than 75 countries around the world. They will compete to present research projects, which are divided into 22 categories.
