President Jokowi remains proud of Indonesian national football team despite its loss

“Although we have not been the champion yet, I and all Indonesian citizens  remain proud of all of your struggles.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has ensured that he and all Indonesians remain proud of Indonesian national football team that has struggled at the 2020 AFF Cup.

“Although we have not been the champion yet, I and all Indonesian citizens  remain proud of all of your struggles,” Jokowi said in his official Instagram account @jokowi uploaded here on Saturday.

The national team has struggled persistently and sportively  throughout the tournament, according to the President.

“For Indonesian National team, you have struggled persistently and sportively,” he noted.

Jokowi also congratulated Thailand on being the 2020 AFF Cup champion after beating Indonesia  6-2 on  aggregate.

“Congratulations to Thailand that has become the champion of 2020 AFF Cup,” President added.

The Indonesian National team secured the runner up  s;pot at the 2020 AFF Cup as it  played out  a 2-2 draw against Thailand on  the second leg of the final match at National Stadium, Singapore, on Saturday night.

 Indonesia  lost to Thailand 2-6  on aggregate after it suffered a 0-4 defeat against Thailand  on  the first leg.

Ricky Kambuaya and Egy Maulana scored the goals on  the second leg of the final match. Meanwhile, Adisak Kraisom and Sarach Yooyen of Thailand equalized and the game finished in a draw.

As a result, Indonesia  secured  the runner-up spot in AFF Cup six  times.

The country  gained the same position in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2010, and 2016 while it has never been the champion.

Meanwhile, Thailand has become AFF Cup champions  for six times respectively in 1996, 2000, 2002, 2014, 2016 and 2020.
