Using public transportation reduces air pollution: VP Kalla

Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - There is a need for citizens to shift from private vehicles to using public transportation services that could help to reduce air pollution in Jakarta, Vice President Jusuf Kalla has said.

The biggest contributor to pollution is vehicle emissions.

"Yes, it is a challenge for the governor and all of us. We need a national movement for this. This is behavior. Whoever the governor is, if this cannot be changed, the problem will remain. We have MRT, light train, and other public transportation services," Vice President Kalla said in Jakarta Tuesday.

Unless the public's dependence on using private vehicles is reduced, air pollution in Jakarta will worsen.

In addition, the use of Euro 4 or high octane fuel could reduce vehicle emissions.

Jakarta is the world’s most polluted city and is categorized as unhealthy, Air quality forecaster AirVisual earlier revealed.

Jakarta had an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 189 Tuesday morning, according to AirVisual.
