Naming Gunawan as Suspect Not Political Move

id Gunawan Suspect Corruption

Jakarta (ANTARA Lampung) - Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Abraham Samad said that naming Commissioner General Budi Gunawan as a suspect in an alleged case of corruption was not a politically motivated assessment.

"The KPK did not suddenly decide to name Gunawan as a suspect. This is not related to political interests," Samad stated after meeting National Police Chief General Sutarman at the national police headquarters here on Tuesday evening.

He further stressed that the anti-graft body under his leadership was a legal institution, not a political one.

The KPK has the duty of combating corruption, which includes grilling officials suspected of being involved in corrupt practices.

During his meeting with General Sutarman, the KPK chief noted that both institutions, the police force and the KPK, will continue to work together to fight corruption, especially to prevent the crime.

Commissioner General Budi Gunawan, who is the sole candidate for the post of the national police chief, was named as a suspect for allegedly receiving commitments when he headed the police peadquarters' career planning bureau from 2003 to 2006 and in other posts in the police," he noted.

According to Samad, Gunawan allegedly violated article 12 (A/B), article 5 (2), and article 11 or 12 (B) of law number31/1999 juncto law number 20/2001 on corruption eradication juncto article 55 (1) of the Criminal Code.

The articles regulate that no civil servant or state official should receive gratifications or commitments from any party or individual who is related to a civil servant or holds a state official's post.

He, however, refused to disclose Gunawan's bank balance details.
